For the first time in history, students from McGill will participate in a field study course in Antarctica, led by Earth and Planetary Sciences professor Eric Galbraith. Participants will cross the Southern Ocean from Ushuaia to the Antarctic peninsula, and visit multiple landing sites.
The expedition runs from February 12 to 28, 2011. Course projects will involve oceanographic sampling, and shore-based work. Evaluation will be based on pre-expedition reading assignments, critical discussions, and research projects.
The expedition is a joint undertaking between four universities, organized by the non-profit Students on Ice.
McGill’s part in the Students on Ice program is offered through the Department of Earth System Science, and is being supervised by Galbraith, who recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University before returning to McGill last year.
Galbraith, who completed his BSc at McGill, worked as a geologist in South America and the Canadian Arctic before becoming an oceanographer. His research looks at how global ocean circulation interacts with the rest of the climate system, what this means for marine life, and how the ocean will respond to future climate change.
