New Delhi: Scientists from all over the world are trying to understand the causes and effects of Global Warming and now they are putting their attention especially on Antarctica. A second year student of University School of Chemical Technology, Indraprastha University, Aman Malik recently got an opportunity to go to Antarctica and study what is happening at the place. He got this opportunity through Students on Ice, a Canadian research organization. This organization selected 53 students from all over the world and Aman was the lone Indian to get selected. The student team comprised of people from many countries like Canada, US, UK, Sweden, Norway and others. These students went to the South Pole to observe and understand its wildlife, glaciers, Geology and Ocean etc.
Aman told that for him the whole experience was very exciting. He studied how snow forms and eventually turns to ice, the types of icebergs and the kind of environment needed for snow to slowly grow and turn into glaciers. Aman says that his next mission is to make it to the Indian Research Station at Maitri.
Sharing his experiences, Aman told with us that while coming back from Antarctica they were stuck in a storm. The waves rose as high as 35 feet and for a moment it felt like the ship was about to break. The storm accompanied them for about a day. In the end they were very thankful that they escaped unhurt. For Aman, the whole journey and the storm was a clear reminder of the power of nature.
